Laptops and Notebooks - 4 Common Issues and Fixes

Posted by Della Comments (0)

Many people these days are opting out of the desktop and buying laptops because they can have the best of both worlds at computer at home which is also mobile at the same time. And while they can be expensive for the high-end models, the many online discount shopping sites are making it possible for anyone to get cheap laptops as opposed to the high retail prices that are found in stores.

The main features that distinguishes laptops is their portability. Laptops perform as well as desktops, but come in a mobile, small package. But this same benefit ironically makes most laptops more vulnerable than desktops.

Port issues, overheating and hard drive issues are jsut a few of the problems associated with laptops. Fixes for laptops can range from very simple cleaning to full overhauls.

Hard Drive Issues and Fixes

Hard drive failures are another common issue for laptops. IDE drives are known to unplug due to movement of laptops. Until solid-state drives were introduced, laptops suffered from rotating hard drives and their vulnerability to shock. Either way, the common laptop fix for this issue was to reset the hard drive in place or replace it if needed.

Overheating

Another common laptop problem is overheating. Laptops are very vulmerable to heat. The fix for this is to clean the air intake from any debree and dust, and you may need to replace the fans that cool the system.

Assemby Problems

The portability function of laptops can sometimes cause internal parts to fail. A word of advice: if you ever disassemble a laptop to change an internal component, make sure you mark which screws go into which slot.

Using the wrong screw, like one that is longer than intended can damage internal parts.

CAble/Port Problems

Ports for peripherals can also fail. Often users forget about cables before lifting them and cause ports (especially power ports) to break. Usually this requires replacing the damaged port or replacing the board.

As with desktop computers, laptop computers also suffer from software problems, network configuration issues, many types of malware and viruses registry errors. But these are fixed by reconfiguring, resetting, or reloading software and by using the best anti virus software to protect from and remove infections.

Of course, some laptop issues will require a technician, extensive hardware replacement or a new machine all together.

Netbook Advantages

1. With current economy they are a great way to get mobile computing benefits in a small and affordable package. With the increasing cost of electronics overall and especially computers, have been buying refurbished laptops, or Netbooks, which allow for a more affordable mobile computing option.

2. They are good for travel and commuters, sometimes are the best laptops for students who can’t afford anything better, and a person who has very few needs in a computer. They got their name because they were originally created to just be used on the Internet and for word processing.

3. They are cheaper overall than any laptop as come brand new for as little as $189. And if all you need is some basic mobile computing, the Netbook is a great alternative.

Cons for Netbooks

There are several cons to Netbooks versus laptops.

1. The most obvious disadvantage is their small size, especially with the screen, screen, which is the biggest turn off for many. This makes it much harder to see especially if you plan to use the Netbook as a primary computing machine.

2. The also lack a full size keyboard and a good mouse. A good example is the recent HP mini that’s keyboard is only 80% of standard size and the mouse is smaller as well. This is far from user friendly.

3. The main negative of the Netbook is the much smaller computing power than the traditional big laptops. Many Netbooks only have 1GB or RAM and a 1.6 GHz processor. Many do not come with a graphics card. This is enough for the simple computer tasks, such as Internet, word processing and others.

You probably won’t be playing any recent games with a Netbook since gaming laptop features require super performance that just does not come with a Netbook, or even using any other software with large resource requirements. This lack of resources is the reason why most net books come with Windows XP, rather than Vista. They are a great way to get some cheap mobile computer benefits.
